Typhoon Vongfong Hurts Dozens In Japan

At least 35 people have been reported injured on the Japanese islands of Okinawa and Kyushu as Typhoon Vongfong unleashed gusts of up to 110mph (180kph) and heavy rain.

The typhoon has toppled trees, flooded streets and cut power to more than 60,000 homes.

It is the second severe storm to hit the island nation in a week.

The US military on Okinawa, where last week's Typhoon Phanfone killed three US airmen who were washed out to sea, told personnel and their families to stay indoors on Sunday until strong winds and rain subsided.

Authorities have also told 150,000 people on Kyushu to evacuate.

Landslide warnings have been issued and strong winds have knocked out power lines, temporarily stopping the bullet train service for several hours there.

Japan's Meteorological Agency said the typhoon could reach the Tokyo area by Tuesday, gradually losing strength as it moves up the archipelago.
