A 21-month-old girl in Detroit has died from Enterovirus D68, marking the state's first fatal case of the illness.

Madeline Reid, who had been on life support since mid-September, reportedly died from the illness on Friday afternoon, USA Today reports. The toddler had been transferred on Sept. 21 from Detroit Medical Center to Children's Hospital of Michigan for additional care, where she eventually died.

'It is never easy to lose a child, and our entire health care team at the Children's Hospital of Michigan is deeply saddened by this family's loss and mourns with them during this very difficult time,'' the hospital's chief medical officer, Dr. Rudolph Valentini, said in a statement.

In a release this week, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) revealed that the virus has sickened 691 people in 46 states and Washington, D.C. A few people infected with the virus have died in recent months.

'Researchers at the University of Michigan are hoping a new Web-based tracking system will help combat disease outbreaks among young students. They were scheduled to present the system Saturday at the American Academy of Pediatrics national conference in San Diego,' details USA Today.

Enterovirus D68 'starts out like the common cold but can quickly turn serious and send children to the hospital with breathing problems,' ABC News details.
