Seven Sayreville High School football players charged in sexual assault, hazing

On a Friday night when the Sayreville War Memorial High School football team was supposed to be playing a game under the lights, six members of the once-proud powerhouse squad were arrested for allegedly sodomizing four teenage teammates with their fingers on four separate occasions.

A seventh member of the team has also been charged but was not taken into custody.

Four days after horrific details emerged regarding the sexually charged hazing rituals inside the Sayreville Bombers' locker room, the Middlesex County Prosecutor's office announced at 10:01 p.m. on Friday that the six members of the team had been arrested for their horrific actions inside the school. No names were announced since all of those arrested were under the age of 18. A press release sent out by the prosecutor's office listed the ages of those arrested as ranging from 15 to 17.

The release said the six juveniles in custody are being held by law enforcement until a Family Court decision on whether to hold them at a detention facility or release them to their parents or guardians.

A seventh member of the team who has been charged in the attacks is 'being sought at this time,' the prosecutor's office announced.

Three of the alleged victims of the hazings reportedly spoke to prosecutors on Thursday.

The arrests capped a whirlwind week that started with vague accusations that eventually turned into a gruesome account of lockerroom molestation of underclassmen members of the team.

After details of the team's hazing rituals were made public earlier this week, superintendent of Sayreville schools Rich Labbe canceled the remainder of the team's season, which drew heavy criticism from certain members of the mostly blue collar, central New Jersey community. Now, members of the team are facing far more serious consequences.

The Sayreville football team is coached by George Najjar, who is in his 20th season at the school. Najjar coached at Abraham Lincoln HS in Coney Island from 1983 to 1995, winning a PSAL city title there in 1993.
