Poll Shows Shaheen, Brown Tied In N.H. Senate Race

In a race that could potentially play a big role in determining which party controls the Senate, the results of a CNN/ORC International poll showed incumbent New Hampshire Sen. Jeanne Shaheen, D-N.H., running neck-and-neck with Republican challenger Scott Brown.

The poll showed Shaheen and Brown tied at 48 percent among likely New Hampshire voters, while another 3 percent said they would vote for neither of the major party candidates.

Other recent polls have shown Brown, a former Senator from neighboring Massachusetts, significantly narrowing the gap against Shaheen.

However, the CNN/ORC poll showed Shaheen with a 51 percent to 44 percent lead over Brown among a slightly larger sample of registered voters.

Shaheen also has a modest advantage in terms of favorability, as 54 percent of likely voters have a favorable opinion of the first-term Senator compared to the 46 percent that have a favorable opinion of Brown.

President Barack Obama's poor approval rating could weigh on Shaheen's chances, however, as 60 percent of likely New Hampshire voter disapprove of the way Obama is handling his job as president.

Holding onto the New Hampshire Senate seat will be important if Democrats hope to maintain control of the Senate following the November midterm elections.

The CNN/ORC survey of 1,039 adults was conducted September 8th through 11th and has a margin of error of plus or minus 3 percentage points.
