The study, conducted by the AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety, says these systems can increase mental distraction on the road.
In-vehicle systems were found to be highly distracting if they had lower-accuracy voice recognition software or were used to compose text messages and emails.
The survey also found that Siri's hands-free and eyes-free technology was highly distracting.
The level of mental distraction was ranked on a scale of 1-5, with 1 being the least distracting.
Listening to a radio is categorized as a 1, while talking on a hand-held or hands-free cell phone is considered a 2. Using a high-quality speech-to-text system in your car is a 3, while using Siri is ranked highest as a 4.
AAA hopes the new research can help companies develop safer hands-free systems, with the goal of creating products that are no more demanding than listening to the radio.
