Long live Spartacus!
Police are looking for the perpetrator of a savage knife attack on a pit bull mix named Spartacus that left the dog for dead early Saturday on a Los Angeles street.
Spartacus, hit over the head with a shovel, needed 1,000 stitches to repair slashes on the animal's face, neck and torso. A deep gash rings the dog's neck, as if some sicko tried to decapitate the poor beast.
'This is very serious on many levels,' LAPD Sgt. Tami Baumman told NBC Los Angeles. 'I have 21 years with the police department and I've never seen a dog that cut up before by somebody.'
The Ghetto Rescue Foundation transported Spartacus to Pet Care Center, where it took a surgeon two hours to close the wounds, CBS Los Angeles reported.
'When we received the call about the badly injured Spartacus, we had heavy hearts!' the Ghetto Rescue Foundation said in a Facebook post. 'We knew we had to help him as he was gravely injured.'
The pit bull, described as docile and gentile, didn't shy away from the petting of strangers, even after his violent encounter.
'Spartacus just sat there, I guess, letting him slice him up. Such a sweet dog,' Pet Care Center's Alex Kyrkland told CBS. 'Whoever this person is, and I can't even use that word, this animal, I think, he tried to cut his throat off.'
The dog is with a foster family while he recovers, in part because his owners fear another attack. Spartacus is not up for adoption, GRFF said.
'Spartacus did nothing wrong, except to be born as a breed hated by some,' GRFF said.
The rescue group paid for the dog's medical treatment, but you can donate on the foundation's website.
