LOS ANGELES (AP) - President Barack Obama has visited the Los Angeles campaign office of Democratic congressional candidate Ted Lieu.
The California state senator is campaigning to succeed long-serving congressman Henry Waxman, who is retiring.
Waxman represents a wealthy, heavily Democratic district that includes the movie star havens of Bel Air, Brentwood and Malibu.
Lieu is running against a prosecutor, Republican Elan Carr.
Obama greeted volunteers at Lieu's campaign office who were telephoning voters on behalf of several Democratic congressional candidates. Obama said their work 'makes a difference.'
He also told Lieu that state senators make 'outstanding' members of Congress.
Obama was an Illinois state senator when he was elected to the U.S. Senate in 2004. Four years later, he was elected president.
