A recent report released by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention on Wednesday revealed that life expectancy in the United States has increased. As per the data, life expectancy in the US has reached to 78 years and 9 ½ months.
According to the CDC report, mortality in 2012 and life expectancy for a child born in 2012 has increased by almost six weeks compared to the life expectancy of those born in 2010 and 2011.
Life expectancy for people who were born in 2012 was more than 81 years for females and almost 76 ½ years for males, said report.
'Life expectancy at birth represents the average number of years that a group of infants would live if the group was to experience throughout life the age-specific death rates present in the year of birth', the report stated.
Dr. Jiaquan Xu, lead author of the report, said the data in the report does not indicate that a person who was born in 2012 is expected to have a shorter life span compared to a person who was at the age of 65 in 2010.
Xu stated that the reason behind difference in the life expectancy of male and female is still not clear. He said that he is also not very sure if genetics plays any role but he is sure that individual behavior does count for one's life expectancy.
In addition, he said that men are usually involved in risky tasks like climbing and scuba diving. The health of United States is improving, Xu said.
Death rates associated with heart disease and cancer that are responsible for almost 46.5% of deaths have declined significantly since 1999.
