A South Korean government spokesman today said that the ongoing operation to recover bodies from the ferry that capsized and then sank off South Korea last month has been suspended today due to bad weather.

The 6,825-tonne Sewol sank around two weeks and 228 people have died and 74 are still missing. 'Divers were unable to dive late Friday and early today due to fast currents and high waves whipped up by gusty winds', Coastguard spokesman Ko Myung-Suk told journalists. He added that over 100 divers were on standby and are waiting for the sea to get normal. According to Ko, the divers are carrying out the operations in challenging conditions. Park Seung-Ki, spokesman for the ministry of oceans and fisheries, said that on Friday bedding materials from the ill-fated ferry were found as far as 30 kilometers (around 20 miles) from site where the tragedy happened. Experts said that it is likely that some bodies might have swept into the ocean sea due to strong waves and that's why rings of netting have been put by recovery workers around the site days ago. The Sewol sank on April 16 with 476 people on board. Over 300 passengers were students of Danwon High School in Ansan city, just south of Seoul, who were going to an island for a holiday.
