The House Ethics Committee announced Friday the creation of a special investigatory panel to probe allegations of wrongdoing by New York Republican Rep. Michael Grimm.
But the panel will 'defer action on its investigation at this time,' because Grimm is under federal indictment.
Grimm, who represents Staten Island and part of Brooklyn, was brought up on a 20-count indictment relating to his ownership of a restaurant in New York. He pled not guilty and was released on a $400,000 bond. He is still serving in Congress, but stepped off of the House Financial Services Committee.

He was charged with mail and wire fraud, filing false tax returns, hiring undocumented workers, health care fraud, perjury and obstruction.
It is standard for the House Ethics Committee to stand down when the Department of Justice asks. Federal criminal investigations take precedence over any by the in-house ethics panel.
