Today President Obama returns to Michigan for the second time in less than two months. Students are excited about this afternoon's speech. Students lined up overnight so they could get tickets to the event, which is not open to the general public. When President Obama was here in February, he signed the farm bill at MSU. He called the farm bill a 'jobs' bill. Today, he will also focus on jobs. The president arrives as the 'Raise Michigan' campaign attempts to collect enough signatures for a ballot proposal that would increase the minimum wage in Michigan to $10.10 an hour, which the president supports at the federal level. Opponents of the increase, like the Michigan Restaurant Association, say the proposal would do away with a reduced minimum wage for servers who receive tips. Right now, servers earn $2.65 an hour, nearly $5.00 an hour less than other employees get. The Restaurant Association says jumping from less than three to more than ten dollars an hour will lead to restaurant closings, and ultimately job loss. We'll be following this story all day.
