IRVING, Texas (AP) - Hillary Rodham Clinton and Jeb Bush say higher education can transform lives and be a force for democracy around the globe.

The potential 2016 presidential candidates said Monday at a Texas conference that the U.S. needs to make higher education more affordable while taking steps to help students access a quality education in the developing world.

Clinton, a Democrat, and Bush, a Republican, are both weighing presidential bids. Their two families have produced three presidents since the 1988 election.

The ex-secretary of state says education is one of America's most valuable assets.

Clinton and Bush did not appear together on stage. Clinton thanked Bush at the start of her speech, noting his focus on education as Florida governor and his 'passion and dedication' to the issue in the private sector.
