NEWARK - Two teens were killed and one youth was wounded tonight in a shooting in the city's South Ward, authorities said.
A 13-year-old girl and 14-year-old boy were fatally shot in an apparent double homicide, said Essex County Prosecutor Carolyn A. Murray and Newark Police Director Samuel DeMaio in a release.
The shooting took place on the 100 block of Schley Street around 10 p.m., not far from Route 78 and the Irvington border, DeMaio told The Star-Ledger.
The unidentified teens were both pronounced dead at University Hospital in Newark tonight, the girl at 10:38 p.m. and the boy at 10:47 p.m., the release stated. The third juvenile victim is in critical but stable condition.
Visibly distraught, about a dozen family members and friends were gathered tonight in the hospital seeking information on the third victim near the trauma center's emergency room.
A family member asked for privacy as reporters sought information.
Newark Police and the Essex County Prosecutor's Homicide/Major Crimes Task Force are investigating the incident, the release said.
Andre Jarrells, a longtime Schley Street resident, did not see the incident but said, 'it's a shame ... it makes no sense.'
The Christmas night shooting comes less than 24 hours after three people were gunned down at a go-go bar in Irvington, only a few blocks from tonight's shooting in Newark.
Pierre Clervoyant Jr., 34, of Elizabeth, the manager and son of the owner of Slick's Go-Go Bar, along with Woodley Daniel, 32, of Hillside, a bouncer at the bar, were both pronounced dead at University Hospital in Newark shortly after 1 a.m. this morning, along with a third victim, Mushir Cureton, 27, of Newark.
Star-Ledger staff writers Ben Horowitz, Bobby Olivier and James Queally contributed to this report.
