An NYPD officer fatally shot a 28-year-old man in a Brooklyn housing project Thursday night, police said.

Authorities say two uniformed officers encountered the man, who was not immediately identified, between the seventh and eighth floors of a dimly lit stairwell during a vertical patrol in the Pink Houses on Linden Blvd. near Eldert Ln. in East New York at 11:15 p.m.

One cop then fired a single shot, hitting the man in the chest, officials said.

It was not immediately clear why the officer fired and police said the investigation was ongoing early Friday.

The man was taken to Brookdale University Hospital, where he died.

Both officers were taken to Jamaica Hospital where they were treated for tinnitus.
