Bad weather in West Africa is to blame for the price of chocolate going up. More than 70 percent of the cocoa for chocolate is produced in the region.
The deficit is also a result of growing demand for chocolate worldwide. Local chocolate makers say they are starting to feel the price increases here at home
'My couverture prices are going up,' said Mary Schellhammer, owner of My Chocolate Shoppe. 'Every time we order couverture now we usually order couverture 500 pounds at a time in this particular store and when we are ordering in that quantity its going up every time I'm ordering it I'm paying a little more per pound.'
Couverture is a type of chocolate base used by chocolate makers to make the shiny chocolate you might find at a chocolate shop or in a box of chocolates.
