The hacker collective Anonymous has taken credit for shutting down the Cleveland city website Monday morning in response to the police killing of a 12-year-old boy carrying an airsoft gun.

The manager of the city's server called police about 3:30 a.m. Monday to report the website was 'under attack,' Cleveland.com reported. The website was still unavailable by midday Monday.

Anonymous has claimed responsibility for the attack, claiming it's in response to the police shooting of 12-year-old Tamir Rice, who was carrying a pellet gun outside a recreational center on Saturday when he was fatally shot by a rookie police officer.

Police said Tamir did not follow orders from officers and he reached into his waistband to pull out the toy gun before he was shot. Police said the gun was believed to be a dangerous weapon, and that the orange indicator typically displayed on such toys was removed.

In a video posted on YouTube, Anonymous claimed the cop shot Tamir 'in cold blood,' and asks why the officer did not Taser the boy first, Cleveland.com reported.

'Police of the United States you will learn in due time once Anonymous has shut down your sites that we will not stand for your ignorant untrained rookie cops,' the message said.

Cleveland spokesman Dan Ball said residents who need services and are unable to connect to the website can call City Hall at 216-644-2900 or dial 311 for information.
