8 Fun Facts About The American Music Awards

The Academy Awards...The Daytime Emmy Awards... The Golden Globes...The Grammys... The American Music Awards...There is so many different awards shows for so many different things! With so many to keep up with, one needs a guide - some facts - to differentiate between shows. While The American Music Awards (AMAs) - are one of the more visible music awards shows, just how much and how well does one know the AMAs? Pro or amateur, here are some interesting facts about the AMAs.

1) In The Beginning...

While a great Biblical reference feels right here to replace the ellipses, the talk here is about the beginnings of the AMAs - its genesis. The legendary began the AMAs. Why would Clark create the AMAs - in the spirit of competition of course! Nobody likes a bully, and the Grammys are king when it comes to music awards, so why not try to tap into that? Dick Clark Productions 'holds the reins' for the AMAs. Interestingly at first AMAs (1974), Donny Osmond and Michael Jackson presented The Temptations with Favorite Soul group.

2) Significance to awards season

Maybe the Grammys are the big brother to the AMAs, but that doesn't make the AMAs 'chopped liver' in the least. According to Dick Clark Productions, the AMAs are viewed around the world - specifically 'more than 160 countries.' Why? The performances, the fashion, and of course the awards themselves.

3) The AMAs are totally NOT the Grammys

The Grammy Awards are often considered both a gift and a curse. Perhaps it's sacrilege to call music's most prestigious recognition a curse in some ways, but members of the Recording academy vote upon the Grammys. That's not the case with the AMAs, which are voted upon by the people - the listeners. Sure, winning a Grammy is the ultimate for a musician - more so than an AMA - but an AMA is special because the fans are directly involved in the process. Think about it, how many times over the years has the 'album of the year' award felt wrong? Exactly!

4) 'Coveted' Award Categories

The AMAs, like every other awards show, features numerous categories. Even with a vast amount of diversity in reference to award categories, some awards are bigger than others. These 'coveted' award categories include Artist of the Year and New Artist of the Year. Single of the Year is also 'kind of a big deal.' Contrasting the Grammys, there isn't an award equivalent to Album of the Year.

Artist of the year has been awarded to various artists, including U2, Madonna, and Taylor Swift. Swift has won honors three times.
