Alex Smith's efficient performance for the Kansas City Chiefs on Sunday became even more impressive on Monday.
Smith, the Chiefs' starting quarterback, sprained his throwing shoulder late in the first half against the St. Louis Rams. But Smith never missed a snap, and he went on to complete 24 of 28 passes for 226 yards in what turned into a 34-7 rout at Arrowhead Stadium.
Smith never mentioned the injury in his postgame remarks. It was not until Coach Andy Reid brought it up Monday that anybody outside the Kansas City locker room learned of it.
'He was able to obviously go through the game, and everything worked out O.K.,' said Reid, who added that Smith was 'a bit sore today.'
Reid said examinations showed no substantial damage to the shoulder.
The injury happened just before halftime. The Chiefs went on to score 24 straight points in the second half.
TWO RAMS OUT FOR SEASON St. Louis Rams offensive lineman Jake Long and wide receiver Brian Quick will miss the rest of the season because of injuries, Coach Jeff Fisher said.
Long tore the anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee in the Rams' loss at Kansas City. He tore the same A.C.L. 10 months ago, ending his 2013 season.
Fisher said Quick 'suffered significant damage' to his shoulder on his lone catch against the Chiefs, a 10-yard gain.
SIDELINED BY CELEBRATION In a game in which the Chicago Bears were badly outclassed, defensive end Lamarr Houston decided to celebrate a sack - his first of the season - of the New England backup quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo in the closing minutes. But Houston ruptured the A.C.L. in his right knee while celebrating, and he will miss the rest of the season, Bears General Manager Phil Emery said.
'We're disappointed for him and in him,' Emery said, adding that Houston apologized to the Bears after their 51-23 loss to the Patriots.
Emery also said guard Matt Slauson would miss the rest of the season with a torn right pectoral muscle.
ROOKIE'S 'BONEHEADED' PLAY The Buffalo Bills rookie wide receiver Sammy Watkins learned a valuable lesson about celebrating too early.
'It was a boneheaded play,' Watkins said, a day after he slowed up, raised his arm and was tackled from behind, 5 yards short of the end zone, in the second quarter of the Bills' 43-23 win over the Jets. 'Next time, I'll run full speed through the goal and score.'
As it was, the play went for 84 yards. Watkins eventually found the end zone for the Bills, on a 61-yard reception in the final quarter. He finished with 157 yards on three catches.
RAVENS LOSE CORNERBACK The Baltimore Ravens will try to rebound from a close loss to the Cincinnati Bengals without cornerback Jimmy Smith, who will be sidelined for several weeks with a sprained left foot. The Ravens (5-3) yielded first place in the A.F.C. North to the Bengals (4-2-1) with the 27-24 loss.
Smith left during the opening drive and did not return. The Ravens later allowed several long passing plays.
CONCUSSION FOR CAMERON Jordan Cameron, a Pro Bowl tight end for the Cleveland Browns, is following the N.F.L.'s protocol after sustaining at least his third concussion in three seasons.
Cameron, 26, was struck in the back of the head by Oakland Raiders safety Brandian Ross in the second quarter while making a diving 21-yard catch. Cameron walked to the locker room under his own power and did not return. He had three catches for 40 yards in the Browns' 23-13 win.
Cameron missed one game last season with a concussion and two in 2012.
