LONDON, Oct. 5 (Xinhua) -- A British teacher, who was held hostage by militants in Libya has been freed and reunited with his family in Britain, British Foreign Office has confirmed.
The 53-year-old man, David Bolam, was principal at the International School Benghazi in northern Libya, which has been closed. He was held captive by militants in May this year.
After five months, he returned to Britain on Thursday night, according to local reports. His abduction was not reported at the request of the Foreign Office and his family.
The Foreign Office has confirmed Bolam is 'safe and well after his ordeal,' while the office said it was not involved in the negotiations.
Local reports said Bolam's release was secured by local political faction, and there was a demand for a ransom for Bolam's release.
'We do not comment on the detail of hostage cases. The family have asked for privacy,' the Foreign Office said.
On August 28, Bolam appeared in a video posted online. He was wearing a white T-shirt and appealed to the Prime Minister David Cameron to secure his release.
