LOUISVILLE, Ky, (WHAS11) -- His video message officially kicked off her campaign last year. He has made two trips to Kentucky for her Senate bid. And , Wednesday, former President Bill Clinton made his first appearance in a campaign ad for Alison Lundergan Grimes. The Grimes campaign said the commercial marks President Clinton's first advertisement for a Senate campaign in the 2014 cycle.

Like her campaign signs, Clinton refers to Grimes by her first name. While not mentioning Republican Leader Mitch McConnell by name, Clinton jabs at McConnell in the ad.

'What's being a senator about, anyway?' Clinton says to an August rally at the Hal Rogers Center in Hazard. 'One candidate believes it's about getting new jobs, getting good jobs, giving middle class people a chance to give their kids a decent life.' 'Nobody can tell me it's not a senator's job to create jobs,' Clinton continues. 'And I choose Alison, because she will work with people from both parties to do what's right for you.' 'Send Alison to the Senate,' the ad concludes.

Clinton's speech was in reference to a Beattyville newspaper story in which McConnell was quoted as saying it was not his job to bring jobs to Lee County.

'Economic development is a Frankfort issue. That is not my job,' McConnell was quoted by the Beattyville Enterprise. In a speech shortly after that interview, however, McConnell spoke about job creation and has argued that his comment has been taken out of context by the Grimes campaign.

Grimes campaign manager Jonathan Hurst said the commercial is backed by a strong, statewide buy.

The McConnell campaign and outside groups supporting his re-election have spent more than one year linking Grimes to another president - Barack Obama - saying that Grimes would enable the Obama agenda.

Obama's approval ratings in Kentucky are at 'Minus 28.'

September 2 Asked of 647 registered voters Margin of Sampling Error for this question = ± 3.9% Is your opinion of former President Bill Clinton... 53% Favorable 26% Unfavorable 18% Neutral 3% No Opinion Bill Clinton's favorability rating in the WHAS11/Courier-Journal Bluegrass Poll is the highest of anyone mentioned, a 'plus 27.' 53% of Kentucky voters view him favorably. 'I really do love Kentucky,' Clinton smiled at the Lexington event. His favorability rating in 2014 outpaces his success on the ballot in Kentucky. The Bluegrass state's eight electoral votes went to Clinton in both of his elections, 1992 and 1996. In the first election, Clinton garnered only 44.5 percent of the Kentucky vote to President George H.W. Bush's 41.3 percent. Independent candidate Ross Perot was the difference maker, siphoning off 13.6 percent of the Kentucky vote. Clinton performed only slightly better in 1996, with 45.8 percent of the vote versus Republican Bob Dole's 44.8 percent. Perot was again a factor, with 8.6 percent of the vote.
