VAIL - Mesquite Elementary School has been named a 2014 'National Blue Ribbon School' todayby the U.S. Department of Education.

Mesquite was selected as an 'Exemplary High Performing School'. The awards are based on each school's overall academic excellence or progress in improving student academic achievement. Only four schools in Arizona were nominated for this award. Nominated schools must then submit an application to be recognized.

'This is another example of the great things happening in Vail,' said Superintendent Calvin Baker. 'With Mesquite being recognized as a National Blue Ribbon School, I am truly once again humbled by the commitment to excellence of our staff, the support of our families and community, and the work of our students in pursuit of academic excellence.'

Staff at Mesquite completed a rigorous written application process that included five years of student achievement data. Katie Dabney, former principal of Mesquite and now Desert Sky Middle School, stated, 'This award is a tribute to the hard work done day in and day out by the Mesquite staff, students, and parents. Our success is a direct result of what happens when great instruction is supported by a strong, healthy community. We are incredibly honored to be the first school in Vail to receive the National Blue Ribbon Award.'

Mesquite will be honored alongside 300 other schools from across the nation at a recognition ceremony held November 10-11 in Washington, D.C.
