A youth aviation program took a tragic turn on Saturday, when a collision between two planes claimed lives of two people, including a pilot and a young boy, while leaving another two injured at the Lancaster-Alden border.
According to the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), a Searey amateur-built aircraft and a Cessna 172 aircraft were flying near the Buffalo-Lancaster Regional Airport around 10:40 this morning when they collided in the midair.
'The planes appeared to clip wings,' said a witness.
The collision left one of the planes crashed in Lancaster, while the other plane safely landed in a field in Alden.
The pilot and the young boy were aboard the plane when it crashed near Town Line Road, killing them both, this morning, Lancaster Police Chief Gerald J. Gill Jr. said.
The Lancaster Police Chief said, 'It's a wooded area so we had to make sure the area was preserved for the investigation, making sure we did not disturb the area so we could conduct the investigation.'
The Seary aircraft that made an emergency landing in field in Keiffer Road was carrying a young woman and a man received minor injuries.
Among those who died in the collision were a 78-year-old male pilot and a 14-year-old male passenger who belonged from Lancaster. And those who received non-life threatening injuries following the planes collision were a nine- year-old girl and an adult male pilot.
As per the investigators, both the planes had participated in the national youth aviation program at the airport with the Experimental Airplane Association (EAA).
