A US teacher has been sentenced to 10 years in custody for raping a 14-year-old student in a case that led to the original judge being suspended after he suggested the attack was partly the victim's fault.

Stacey Dean Rambold was re-sentenced on Friday, one year after he completed an initial 30-day prison term for the crime.

He received 15 years, with five years suspended.

Rambold, 55, pleaded guilty to sexual intercourse without consent in the 2007 incident involving Cherice Moralez, a student in his high school business class in Billings, Montana.

She took her own life in 2010 before Rambold went to trial.

Auliea Hanlon, Moralez's mother, tearfully told the court on Friday that Rambold's actions were 'definitely a factor' in her daughter's suicide.

'If you have a daughter, go home and hug her, because I can't hug my daughter no more,' she said, according to the Billings Gazette.

The state Supreme Court overturned Rambold's initial sentence, citing in part comments from Judge Todd Baugh.

He was censured and suspended for 31 days after saying last year that the victim was 'as much in control of the situation' as Rambold.

Judge Baugh is stepping down when his terms ends in January.
