Soldiers Killed in Suicide Attack at US Base in Kabul

KABUL, Afghanistan - Three soldiers with the American-led coalition were killed and five wounded Tuesday after their convoy was targeted in a car bomb attack at the gates of a United States military base in Kabul, according to Afghan government and American military officials.

The attack took place just outside an American Special Operations base, but there was no confirmation from the International Security Assistance Force, as the coalition is called, about the nationalities of the victims.

A spokesman for the Afghan Interior Ministry, Sediq Sediqqi, said that 13 civilians were wounded but none killed in the attack. He also said that 17 cars were damaged.

A spokesman for the Taliban, Zabiullah Mujahid, took credit for the bombing in a posting on Twitter and praised the suicide bomber who carried it out.

The attack took place near the crowded Massoud Circle, across from the American Embassy and in front of the military base, in the middle of the morning rush hour. The area is normally heavily congested at that time.

Mr. Sediqqi said a maroon Toyota Corolla sedan packed with explosives was used to attack the two-vehicle coalition convoy.
