JERUSALEM - The Israeli military said Tuesday morning that it had shot down a Syrian aircraft that 'infiltrated into Israeli airspace,' and that a Patriot air-defense missile had been used to intercept 'the aircraft in mid-flight.'
'The circumstances of the incident are being reviewed,' the military said in a statement.
Israel has responded on several occasions throughout the last three years to what it has described as errant fire from the Syrian civil war that has landed in the Israeli-controlled Golan Heights. But Israel has insisted it will not get involved in the fighting in Syria unless it spills into its territory.
Lt. Col. Peter Lerner, a spokesman for the Israeli military, said the aircraft was a Russian-made Sukhoi fighter jet, with at 'at least one or two pilots or navigators aboard.' He said the plane came into Israeli airspace at about 9:15 a.m. but was not sure how long it was there for, or how deep it penetrated.
'This is developing, we'll have to see where it goes,' he said.
