The Indian Mars Orbiter Mission (MOM) probe was inserted successfully into an orbit around the planet Mars on September 24, 2014.
The Indian Mars Orbiter Mission, nicknamed MOM and informally called Mangalyaan , joined spacecraft from the United States, the European Space Agency, and the former Soviet Union in the elite club of Martian explorers.
India is the first Asian nation to reach Mars. In addition, India is the first nation to successfully place its first Martian probe in orbit about the planet.
The MOM probe lifted-off from the First Launch Pad at Satish Dhawan Space Centre SHAR, Sriharikota, Andhra Pradesh, at 09:08 UTC (14:38 IST) on November 5, 2013.
The Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle (PSLV) XL C25 rocket launched the MOM probe.
The MOM probe spent about one month in orbit about the Earth before making a series of seven maneuvers that raised its orbital altitude.
It then made another maneuver on November 30, 2013, that placed it on a trans-Mars injection.
Just less than nine months later, the MOM probe was inserted in an orbit about Mars, at 02:00 UTC on September 24, 2014.
Personnel at the Spacecraft Control Centre at the Indian Space Research Organization's (ISRO) Telemetry, Tracking and Command Network (ISTRAC) in Bangalore, India, are monitoring the status of the Indian probe, with help from the Indian Deep Space Network (IDSN) antennae at Byalal, India.
The following statement came from NASA administrator Charles Bolden: 'We congratulate the Indian Space Research Organisation for its successful arrival at Mars with the Mars Orbiter Mission.'
Bolden added, 'It was an impressive engineering feat, and we welcome India to the family of nations studying another facet of the Red Planet. We look forward to MOM adding to the knowledge the international community is gathering with the other spacecraft at Mars.'
And, 'All space exploration expands the frontiers of scientific knowledge and improves life for everyone on Earth. We commend this significant milestone for India.'
