FSU star QB Jameis Winston suspended for first half vs. Clemson

For The Miami Herald

Florida State quarterback Jameis Winston will be suspended for the first half of Saturday's game against ACC rival Clemson after reportedly yelling obscenities on campus.

Deadspin.com first reported that Winston stood on top of a table on campus and yelled a profane phrase that has become a popular joke among college students.

A joint statement released by interim school president Garnett Stokes and athletics director Stan Wilcox said FSU's student-athletes are 'expected to uphold at all times high standards of integrity and behavior that reflect well upon themselves, their families, coaches, teammates, the Department of Athletics and Florida State University.'

The statement went on to refer to Winston's comments as 'offensive and vulgar' and said that he'll receive internal discipline.

The suspension came about an hour after coach Jimbo Fisher said on a teleconference that FSU was considering a punishment for Winston. The third-year sophomore won the Heisman Trophy and led the Seminoles to a national title in 2013.

Fisher said at the time that the university was 'deciding' an appropriate consequence.

'It was not a good decision,' Fisher said. 'You can't make statements that are derogatory. You have to understand that.'

Third-year sophomore Sean Maguire will start in Winston's place.

Maguire has 144 passing yards and two touchdowns in his career as a reserve. He entered spring of 2013 as FSU's fourth-team quarterback before Clint Trickett and Jacob Coker both transferred.

This is just the latest of several incidents during Winston's time at FSU.

Last year he was accused of sexual assault stemming from an incident that occurred in December 2012, but he was not charged after prosecutors determined there was not enough evidence to bring a case. Earlier this year, Winston was suspended from the baseball team for three games after admitting he shoplifted crab legs from a Tallahassee Publix supermarket.

Winston has had other incidents involving law enforcement authorities in Tallahassee.

In November 2012, police were called to an apartment complex in which 13 windows had been damaged by BB guns. Winston and his roommate at the time said Florida State players were engaged in a series of 'battles' with each other, although they denied shooting BB guns themselves. Winston was not charged with any crime.

In another incident, police records show Winston came into a Burger King with three men but did not order food, instead asking for a water cup he repeatedly filled with soda over an employee's objections. The report says Winston was never interviewed about the incident because the restaurant declined to prosecute.
