Flights stopped while police seek Ariz. shooting suspect

PHOENIX - Terminal 4 at Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport remained on lockdown as police searched for a Tempe shooting suspect Thursday afternoon.

Sgt. Steve Martos, a Phoenix police spokesman, said Terminal 4 has been closed for police activity and that 'no one will be allowed in until we are done.'

Police blocked the terminal entrance and passengers on an airport shuttle bus wondered whether they would make their flights.

'They stopped at Terminal 3 and told us to get off and didn't tell us why,' said Lynn Gerber. She was in Phoenix on business and had a 4:55 p.m. US Airways flight back to Long Beach, Calif.

Police said they have one of two suspects in custody.

The suspects are sought in connection with a shooting at a Shell gas station at Price and Broadway roads. Tempe police say one man shot at another during an altercation at about 2:45 p.m. Thursday in the gas-station parking lot.

The shooting victim ran into a nearby apartment complex while the shooter fled the scene in a red Pontiac Grand Am, according to Tempe police Sgt. Mike Pooley.

Police said officers tracked down the Grand Am but were forced to terminate the high-speed pursuit when the suspects drove into Sky Harbor airport.

Phoenix police are assisting in the search.

Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport is one of the 10 busiest airports in the nation for passenger traffic with $79 million daily economic impact, according to its website.

More than 1,200 aircraft and 100,000 passengers arrive and depart from Sky Harbor each day.
