FERGUSON, MO (NBC) - The grand jury in Ferguson, Missouri now has until early January to decide whether the police officer who shot an unarmed teenager should be charged.
18-year-old Michael Brown was shot and killed by Ferguson police officer Darren Wilson on August 9.
The shooting sparked weeks of protests and unrest in the town.
Officer Brown has been suspended during the investigation.
According to the prosecutor's spokesperson, the judge extended the grand jury's deadline to January 7.
The Justice Department is also conducting a civil rights investigation into the Ferguson police force's conduct, use of force, traffic stops, searches and the treatment of detainees.
