Celtics star Rajon Rondo has broken hand

Celtics point guard Rajon Rondo, a four-time All-Star, had surgery Friday to repair a broken bone in his left hand, league sources told the Globe.

He underwent successful surgical fixation of a left metacarpal fracture at New England Baptist Hospital, the Celtics announced in a statement Friday night.

Rondo broke his hand in a fall at his home Thursday night, the statement said.

A timetable for his return is 6-8 weeks.

The injury marks another setback for Rondo, the last remaining Celtic from the 2008 championship season. He is entering the final year of his contract with the Celtics, and after suffering a season-ending knee injury in January 2012, Rondo spent much of last season trying to work his way back into form.

Celtics executives had said they expected this season to be the best of Rondo's career.

With Rondo expected to be sidelined, the Celtics might turn to rookie Marcus Smart at point guard. He was the team's 2014 first-round draft pick out of Oklahoma State, selected sixth overall in June.

The Celtics are scheduled to begin training camp next week.
