Reaction is coming in after last night's debate between California Governor Jerry Brown and Republican challenger Neel Kashkari.
Governor Brown's opening statement included his accomplishments with the economy.
'I rolled up my sleeves, I started cutting that budget, the Legislature gave me one that I didn't think was tough enough so I sent it back. I vetoed the first California budget in the history of this state,' Brown said.
Kashkari opened by talking about why he should be elected.
'I think Gov. Brown means well, but his 40 years in government has left him out of touch with the struggles of working families,' Kashkari said.
Kashkari said Brown had failed to improve California's schools during his term as governor.
However, Randi Weingarten, president of the American Federation of Teachers, says Kashkari ignored the fact that Prop 13 took money away from schools in the state.
The Republican candidate for governor criticized Brown for a public school system that is among the worst performing by national math and reading standards.
When asked if he would participate in another debate with Kashkari, Brown said last night's exchange 'exposed the differences' between the candidates.
The debate also included a challenge to Governor Brown concerning why California did not get the big Tesla battery plant.
'It's pretty clear what happened. We fought hard for Tesla, but Tesla wanted a massive cash upfront payment that I don't think would be fair to the taxpayers of California,' Brown said.
Kashkari went after Brown on a gas tax that is scheduled to go into effect next year. The gas tax is a result of the state's cap and trade program.
'His plan is designed to raise the cost of electricity for working families, to raise the cost of your gas prices, to try to make alternatives more competitive,' Kashkari said.
