CENTRAL CHILE - An earthquake occurred this afternoon in five central regions of Chile, including Valparaíso, Maule and Metropolitan, according to the National Emergency office (ONEMI). The earthquake was located 108 kilometers North from Santiago (37 km North of Valparaiso), at a depth of 41.7 km.
According to the USGS it measured 6.6 in the Richter scale but according to the Centro Sismológico Nacional (CSN) it was 6.4. It lasted between 30 and 40 seconds.
Social media users have reported some communication problems and apparently some carrier companies are not working correctly.
The Servicio Hidrográfico y Oceanográfico de la Armada (SHOA) stated that the earthquake was not strong enough to cause a tsunami alert.
According to ONEMI, the earthquake was stronger in the Talca area, where it measured 7 in the Mercalli scale.
The Casablanca area had no power after the earthquake.
Daniel Brewington CEO of Brewington & Compania, parent company of I Love Chile News, said he felt the earthquake as he was sitting down to dinner with his family in the town of Pirque, a suburb in the south part of Santiago .
Speaking via Skype Daniel described the moment the earthquake hit. 'I'll be honest with you at first we did not think anything of it, just another tremor' he said, 'but after 20 seconds when it didn't stop our family entered in to earthquake mode. My wife turned off the stove and gas, I gathered up the children and started to move to our safe zone. However by that time it did stopped, thankfully'
According to Mr. Brewington cellphone service was spotty at best but internet service was running without any noticeable problems and there were no power outages in his area.
According to , there has been no disruption to basic services or infrastructure and there are no reports of fatalities.
