Peter Theo Curtis overwhelmed with emotion for 'big

An American writer who was held hostage by terrorists for nearly two years in Syria spoke publicly for the first time since his abduction Wednesday.

Peter Theo Curtis, 45, addressed the media briefly just after 10 a.m. outside his mother's house in Cambridge, Mass.

'I have learned bit by bit that there have been literally hundreds of people - brave, determined and big-hearted people all over the world working for my release,' he said.

In prison, he was completely unaware of just how much energy was expended for his liberation.

'I'm just overwhelmed with emotion,' he said.

Curtis was profoundly touched by the 'total strangers' who have wished him well since he stepped foot back on American soil. These people have welcomed him back to the United States and shown the goodness of the American people, all over again.

'To all those people I say a huge thank you from the bottom of my heart,' he said.

But Curtis' speech did not last long. At long last, Curtis is finally enjoying time with his family. But he assured the media he will reach out as soon as he is ready.

'In the future I promise I will respond to your emails,' he said. 'I'm one of you and I know what you guys are going through.'

Jabhat al-Nusra, an Al Qaeda-linked terrorist group, kidnapped Curtis in October 2012. He was so isolated that he did not even know about President Obama's reelection.
