Chiefs sign QB Alex Smith to four

The Kansas City Chiefs are on the verge of locking up their quarterback for the long haul.

The team was finalizing a four-year, $68 million contract extension Sunday night with Alex Smith that includes $45 million in guarantees, a person with knowledge of the pact told USA TODAY Sports.

The person spoke on condition of anonymity because language was still being finalized.

Smith, 30, was entering the last year of the three-year deal he signed in 2012 with the San Francisco 49ers, who traded him to the Chiefs last year.
