The former secretary of state posted a vintage, Instagram-esque shot of him in his younger years, standing before a mirror and holding a camera to capture himself in the reflection.
The 76-year-old retired statesman bragged to Oscar host Ellen DeGeneres that he was doing the self-portraits before the comedian, 56, was even born.
'Throwback Thursday - I was doing selfies 60 years before you Facebook folks. Eat your heart out Ellen!' General Powell wrote in a Facebook post.
DeGeneres rocked social media during the Academy Awards when she snapped a selfie with Hollywood A-listers Bradley Cooper, Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt, among others.
The tweet earned more than 3.3 million retweets, a new record for the social media site.
