Authorities in Los Angeles County are trying to determine the identity of a woman whose torso was found Monday by workers at a sewage plant.
MyFoxLA.com reported that the remains were found in one of the Bassett, Calif. facility's settling tanks, where waste goes after it is separated into liquids and solids. Investigators say the remains are of the same woman whose lower body was discovered Saturday at a plant in Carson, approximately 30 miles to the southeast. Bassett is an unincorporated community located approximately 20 miles east of downtown Los Angeles.
Authorities are treating the case as a homicide, and say that the woman's body was likely in one piece when someone disposed of it via a manhole or sewer line. However, investigators from the Los Angeles County Coroner's office speculate that the body was dismembered when it went through a centrifuge that separate's liquids from solids.
'People don't just fall into a manhole cover,' Sheriff's Lt. Mike Rosson said at a news conference Monday.
Investigators are focusing their early inquiries on the area of the San Gabriel Valley, east of downtown Los Angeles.
