Trick or treaters urged to stay safe on Halloween

Parents, caregivers and children are being asked to stay safe while celebrating Halloween this year.

Police say children should always go trick or treating with an adult, stay in areas that are well lit and only visit houses where they know the residents.

Children should also be careful not to scare elderly people, police said.

A Halloween-themed safety video has been released by police providing children with tips for trick or treating.

National prevention manager Superintendent Bruce Bird said householders did not have to respond to knocks on the door on Halloween.

Mr Bird said if there were problems or incidents outside houses, call police for assistance.
