The Syrian Electronic Army, a hacker group supporting the Assad regime, claimed credit Monday for compromising the Obama campaign's link shortening service, redirecting links from the president's campaign Twitter and Facebook accounts to one of the group's propaganda videos.

A spokesperson for Organizing for Action, the successor group to the Obama campaign which retains control of @BarackObama and the Barack Obama Facebook page told TIME 'An account to our link shortener was hacked.' Obama's Twitter and Facebook accounts were not compromised in the attack.

On Twitter, the hacker group claimed it had accessed 'many' email accounts belonging to the campaign, posting screenshots purporting to be from the Obama campaign website backend. The OFA spokesperson did not immediately comment on whether the other accounts were hacked.

Shortly after the attack, Twitter added a warning to links posted by OFA warning that they may be visiting an unsafe site.

Obama doesn't have any ethical issues with spying on the world, so we took it upon ourselves to return the favor. #SEA- SyrianElectronicArmy (@Official_SEA16) October 28, 2013
