WINDERMERE, Fla. - Tiger Woods was so hoarse after the third round of the Hero World Challenge, he could barely talk. It did not matter: For the first time all week, he could let his clubs do the talking without worrying about the message they would deliver.
Playing with a fever and flulike symptoms, Woods carded a three-under-par 69 at Isleworth Golf and Country Club on Saturday to move to even par for the tournament. He remained last in the 18-man field. With a glance at the scoreboard, which showed 21-year-old Jordan Spieth running away from the field, Woods said: 'Not bad. I'm only 15 back.'
By the end of the day, Spieth was 20 strokes clear of Woods, who woke up feeling poorly but did not consider withdrawing because he was the tournament host. Woods vomited during his warm-up session on the range and again on the third hole, and he changed his shirt, which was soaked with perspiration, after nine holes.
As bad as he felt, he hit his irons crisply and was accurate with his driver. The only part of his game that was ailing was his chipping. He chunked more chips, as he has every round, but hit most of the fairways and greens and birdied the last three holes.
'Wasn't easy and I fought hard,' Woods said in a raspy voice. 'That's about all I had.'
He added, 'I wasn't doing too good at the beginning, but I thought I could hang in there.'
