Nineteen people were hospitalized early Sunday morning after a chlorine leak at a Hyatt hotel in Rosemont.
The hotel was hosting the Midwest FurFest convention, a gathering of 'furry' enthusiasts, the Chicago Tribune reported, and thousands of people evacuated the hotel around 12:40 a.m. Rosemont police suspected the chlorine gas was released intentionally, the report said, based on the source of the gas, which appeared to be powdered chlorine in a ninth-floor stairwell, the report said.
People eventually were allowed back into the hotel shortly after 4 a.m., the Tribune added.
In a statement posted to its web site, the Midwest FurFest said Rosemont authorities are treating the gas release as a crime. The statement also said the convention would continue Sunday, its final day, as scheduled.
