Lowell, MI (CNN) - Police in Lowell, Michigan are having some fun this Christmas season.
They are handing out gifts instead of tickets.
Scott Vansolkema/Lowell Police: 'It was kind of different. Ok, people don't like getting stopped by police but we'll make it work.'
For Officers Scott Vansolkema and Gordy Lauren, the task of asking drivers what they wanted for Christmas was a bit awkward but they did it, for a good cause.
Gordy Lauren/Lowell Police: 'Got all your Christmas shopping done?' 'No, haven't even started.'
A team was waiting at a nearby store to pick up the items from the driver's 'wish' list. They ranged from toys to TV's.
Gordy says, 'The item was picked up, wrapped, given to the officer, given to the person. (It was a ten minute period) correct.'
The 'Christmas surprise' video was shot by a production crew from up TV a family friendly network, on cable. They spent two days in Lowell following officers around, while they pulled people over for 'minor violations.'
Scott says, 'Someone with dangling objects from rearview mirror, or tinted windows, snow covered license plate.'
In the end, the drivers got a present, instead of a ticket. It was no doubt a pleasant 'surprise.'
'Something like this? Oh my god, yeah. Open back seat. Did you really pull me over? Yeah, you have illegal tinted windows. I can give you a ticket if you want.'
For the officers, it was a chance to do some good and have some fun, on the job.
'You're welcome, Merry Christmas.' 'I want to hug you.'
