For Sony Pictures and its employees, the nightmare appears to be very far from over. Mere days after a cyber attack on Sony Pictures Entertainment, the hack's perpetrators reportedly sent a series of threatening emails addressed not just to the company's employees, but also to their loved ones.
A person, purporting to be part of cyber-hackers Guardians of Peace, sent Sony Pictures employees emails, promising the 'collapse' of the company, but also adding a foreboding warning should they refuse to take up their cause and rally against the company they work for. A complete copy of the email was published on Variety, and in brief, it says that last week's cyber attack is 'only a small part' of the GOP's plans. The email, which is riddled with grammatical errors, tries to make Sony Pictures appear accountable for every action it would take with regards to GOP's threats.
In closing, the hackers make the following threat to Sony Pictures and its workers. 'Please sign your name to object the false [sic] of the company at the email address below if you don't want to suffer damage,' says the email. 'If you don't, not only you but your family will be in danger.'
Previously, reports had suggested that the North Korean government was behind the GOP hack, but an unnamed official released a prepared statement to Voice of America on Thursday, denying North Korean involvement. 'Linking the (Democratic People's Republic of Korea) to the Sony hacking is another fabrication targeting the country,' read the official's statement. 'My country publicly declared that it would follow international norms banning hacking and piracy.'
While the Federal Bureau of Investigations said in its own statement that it is still in the process of investigating the Sony Pictures hack, the Guardians of Peace's identity remains a mystery, apart from its taking ownership of the cyber attack that crippled Sony Pictures' computer system. GOP claims that it is a 'worldwide organization,' but neither its motives nor more specific details about the group remain unclear as of this writing.
