Convicted sex offender rakes in millions with Florida lottery ticket

This past weekend a convicted sex offender became a multi-millionaire thanks to a Florida lottery scratch off ticket he purchased at a 7-Eleven Saturday night.

'He was flabbergasted. He couldn't believe it,' said Floyd Snyder, a friend who was with Poole when he purchased the winning ticket. 'It was quite a remarkable thing. My heart is still beating.'

Timothy Poole was arrested in 1999 on allegations of sexually battering a 9-year-old boy, while living with the victims family. According to the complaint, Poole performed sexual acts on the boy while sharing a bed with him at the family's home.

According to the arrest warrant, 'He said Tim would sleep in the same bed as him at his house' and perform a sex act on the child, the detective wrote in the affidavit. 'He said sometimes Tim would wake him up from sleeping to (perform a sex act).'

Poole denied the allegations at first and ended up serving 13 months in jail. He was then presented with a plea bargain at which point he plead guilty to attempted sexual battery. He was sentenced to the 13 months he already had served, forced to register as a sex offender and placed on 10 years sex offender probation.

However, in 2003 Poole was sent back to prison after missing four of his court ordered sex offender counseling sessions. Poole was released from prison in 2006 and has not had any run in with the law since according Snyder.

'I've known him for years and I've never seen any inclination of anything like that with him,' said Snyder. 'He's a very positive person. Very kind. Giving. I think that's why he won. It's Christmas time and the dude deserves a break.'

Since his release from prison Poole has worked as a cab driver and dispatcher for his mother's taxi company.

Poole still maintains that he is innocent of the charges that ultimately cost him years of his life.

'It may be hard for some to believe, but sometimes people are wrongly accused,' Poole said on Local 6 back in November.

Florida law does not withhold payments from winners based on their criminal background. Poole will just be subjected to the the standard background check to ensure they do not owe child support or any outstanding debts to a state agency.

Poole is slated to get a one-time, lump-sum of $2,219,807.90.
