Stock Watch: Mississippi State snatches No. 1 in Amway Coaches Poll

Mississippi State is bowl eligible. As Bulldogs' coach Dan Mullen said following his team's latest victory Saturday, that used to be a big deal around Starkville.

But there's even bigger news for Mississippi State after its takedown of defending SEC champ Auburn. The Bulldogs are No.1.

For the first time, Mississippi State tops the Amway Coaches poll, vaulting all the way up from the No. 6 position. It was a close vote as the Bulldogs narrowly edged Florida State by a single point. Mississippi State claimed 26 of 62 No.1 votes. The Seminoles received 31 but still slid to No.2 after a win at Syracuse. A huge showdown with No. 5 Notre Dame is on tap in Tallahassee.

The good news for the Magnolia State continued as Ole Miss moved up to No. 3. The Rebels, who followed up their home win against Alabama with a road triumph at Texas A&M, picked up the remaining five No. 1 votes to edge ahead of No. 4 Baylor. The Bears slipped a spot despite mounting a strong fourth-quarter rally to overtake previously unbeaten TCU.

Stock up: Michigan State. It was only a two-position gain, but it was a significant move for the Spartans to the No. 6 spot as they now claim the title of highest-ranked one-loss team. They nudged ahead of No. 7 Alabama, which barely escaped Arkansas with a one-point win.

Stock down: Auburn: Miss State's latest victim slid six places to No.8 but still has opportunities to compete for the SEC crown.

Stock up: Oregon. The Ducks jumped back into the top 10 after handling UCLA at the Rose Bowl. They moved up two places to No. 9 to slip ahead of No. 10 Georgia. The Bulldogs stayed put despite an impress road shutout of Missouri.

Stock down: Texas A&M. The Aggies took another tumble following their second consecutive loss. The seven-spot drop to No. 21 was the biggest plummet within the poll.

Stock up: Oklahoma State. The Cowboys got out of Kansas with a win by a touchdown but still made one of the biggest moves of the week outside of Mississippi. They gained three places to check in at No.15.

Stock down: Arizona. The Wildcats nearly pulled off yet another miraculous comeback but came up short against Southern California. Their first loss of the season cost them four poll positions as they slipped to No.17.

New kids on the block: No. 23 Utah, No. 24 Marshall, No. 25 Southern California.

College dropouts: UCLA, Georgia Tech, Missouri.
