Emergency management officials say participating in a regional drill can help families, schools and businesses be prepared for a possible earthquake scenario.
Officials had urged Tri-State residents to take part in Thursday's Great Central U.S. ShakeOut Earthquake Drill, in which people simultaneously practice taking cover at a designated time and identify any needed adjustments to their emergency plans.
Officials suggested that the drill should take place at 10:16 a.m. Thursday.
The event's website shows at least 2.7 million participants registered for the drill in the 11-state region from Ohio to Alabama to Kansas.
Similar drills in other regions and countries also were scheduled Thursday. According to the drill website, more than 25 million participants registered worldwide.
