Peyton Manning throws three touchdowns as Jets lose fifth straight, fall to Broncos

Wait 'til next year.

That's all Jets fans will have to think about for the final 10 games of what will probably end up being a painful year. The Jets essentially sealed their fate after predictably losing 31-17 to the Broncos at MetLife Stadium Sunday, extending their losing streak to five long games with a date in Foxborough just four days away.

Rex Ryan, who could easily be out the door at the end of the year, actually got his wish: an off day from Peyton Manning. The future Hall of Fame QB misfired on some of his throws and at times was overwhelmed by the Jets' pass rush. It didn't matter.

The Jets (1-5) had a chance, having the ball down seven points in the fourth quarter. But their offense couldn't ever get going again - Geno Smith even threw a pick-six in the final minute as a cherry on top - allowing the Broncos to get their expected result.

After Manning opened the game with a 54-yard completion Demaryius Thomas, the Jets actually made a stand and kept the Broncos to a field goal, but at a cost. Potentially, a big cost. Cornerback Dee Milliner suffered a non-contact ankle injury on third down, had to be helped off the field and was immediately ruled out for the game.

But the Jets defense held early, despite Milliner's absence, allowing the Jets to start their second offensive drive inside Broncos territory. The offense held up to its end of the bargain, as Smith hit Jace Amaro on a fade route near the back-right corner of the end zone to put Gang Green up 7-3.

The Jets defense continue to put pressure on Manning and wreak havoc: even after Walt Powell muffed a punt in the second quarter (after almost fumbling a kick return in the first), the defense forced a fourth-straight punt by the Broncos. Eventually, however, that streak had to end and it did: Manning led a 10-play, 43-yard drive that ended with a one-yard TD pass to Demaryius Thomas to put the Broncos ahead 10-7 with 5:50 left in the half.

When Manning gets going, he usually doesn't take his foot off the pedal. Despite strong play earlier, the Jets defense surrendered another touchdown before half, when the vaunted Broncos quarterback hit the other Thomas - tight end Julius Thomas - for a 22-yard score.

Denver picked up where it left off in the second half. Another touchdown to Julius Thomas, this one for four yards on a slant against Calvin Pryor. Thomas himself perfectly described the situation, yelling, 'too easy!' after the score that extended Denver's lead to 17 points.

Just went it seemed like it was over, the Gang Green offense woke up in the fourth quarter. Down 14 points after kicking a field goal in the third quarter, Smith led his team on a drive that was broken open by a 27-yard, third-down reception by Greg Salas to put the Jets in the red zone. Then Smith was able to find Decker for a two-yard touchdown against the receiver's old team, making the Broncos advantage just 24-17 with 7:56 left in the game.

The Jets had one last chance at the end of the game, getting the ball back with 56 seconds left with no timeouts at the five-yard line. But Smith made one last Jets move: throwing a pick-six 15 seconds left.
