Jose Canseco Shoots Self in Hand While Cleaning Gun

Former Major League Baseball star Jose Canseco accidentally shot himself in the hand while cleaning a handgun in his Las Vegas home Monday afternoon, police said.

'It was a serious hand injury,' Las Vegas Metro Police Lt. Mark Reddon said of the 2:30 p.m. accident in northeast Las Vegas, which damaged one of the fingers on Canseco's left hand.

Reddon said no criminality is suspected, and that Canseco apparently didn't realize there was a round in the chamber as he cleaned a large-caliber handgun. 'There was nothing suspicious. There was no alcohol involved, just a misstep with a handgun,' Reddon said. Canseco was a star with the Oakland Athletics in the 1980s and helped the team win the 1989 World Series. He later played for the Texas Rangers and Boston Red Sox and other teams, but in 2005 he admitted to using steroids in a tell-all.
