U.S. Senate candidate Cory Gardner is maintaining a lead over incumbent Mark Udall as election day nears, the latest Quinnipiac University poll says.
Among 974 likely Colorado voters surveyed Oct. 15-21, Gardner, currently a Republican congressman, draws support from 46 percent and Democrat Udall from 41 percent. Unaffiliated candidate Steve Shogan gets 6 percent support, and 6 percent remain undecided, Quinnipiac says in survey results released Friday.
That's a slightly smaller lead for Gardner than in a Quinnipiac poll released Oct. 16, which showed the Republican ahead 47-41 percent, and a Sept. 18 survey showing a 48-40 percent advantage for the challenger.
Colorado's Senate race is seen as a key battlefield in the war for party control of the U.S. Senate, where the Democrats now hold a narrow majority.
The latest survey shows Udall with a modest lead among likely women voters (45-41 percent) and Gardner with a larger advantage among men (51-38 percent). Udall's lead among women has slipped from the 49-40 percent margin in the survey released Oct. 16.
There's just a 2-point lead for Gardner among independent voters in the new poll.
'The needle is barely moving for U.S. Sen. Mark Udall and U.S. Rep. Cory Gardner in a Senate race with potential national consequences' said Tim Malloy, assistant director of the Quinnipiac University Poll.
The latest survey aligns with results of several recent public polls that show a modest lead for Gardner.
A compilation by Real Clear Politics of six recent surveys conducted since Oct. 9, not including the latest Quinnipiac poll, shows an average 4-point advantage for the Republican.
