CHICAGO (AP) - Police say one man is dead, another is in custody and a police captain has been hospitalized following an exchange of gunfire and six-hour standoff at an apartment building on Chicago's South Side.
Chicago Police Supt. Garry McCarthy says the 58-year-old police captain was shot in the head and shoulder during the incident Tuesday evening in Englewood. McCarthy says the 29-year veteran of the Chicago Police Department is in stable condition.
Chicago police said in a statement that the shooting happened as officers tried to arrest a man wanted in Indiana for multiple shootings. After the captain was hurt, dozens of heavily armed police officers surrounded the building and the standoff ensued.
McCarthy says one suspect is dead and another in custody. He didn't release their names.
