A RARE working Apple-1 computer has raised a record $905,000 (around £563,900) at auction, trumping the previous record of $668,000.

The Apple-1 in question was hand built by Apple co-founder Steve Wozniak in the late Steve Jobs' garage in 1976.

Auctioneer Cassandra Hattan described the ageing computer as one of the most pristine she had seen.

'It's in the best condition of any we've seen in the last four years. I would say this is in the best condition of any that have sold,' she said.

The Apple-1 was expected to fetch $300,000 to $500,000. However, while many would rather buy a spanking new iMac, it was bought for nearly double the estimate by The Henry Ford organisation, which coughed up $905,000 for the 'mint condition' machine at the auction in New York.

This beats the previous record, set in May last year, when an Apple-1 sold for $668,000, or around £440,000, at an auction in Germany. The previous year, a working Apple-1 fetched $640,000 at the same auction house.

Patricia Mooradian, president of The Henry Ford, called the computer 'a key artefact in the foundation of the digital revolution' and said that it will be displayed in the organisation's museum in Dearborn, Michigan.

'Similar to what Henry Ford did with the Model T, Steve Wozniak and Steve Jobs put technology directly in the hands of the people with the creation of the Apple-1, completely altering the way we work and live,' Mooradian added.

It is believed that the device is one of only 15 remaining working Apple-1 computers. ยต
